The District Development Committee has decided not to issue permit for soil-mining till the end of the rainy season. The applications that are now pending will be considered only after the monsoon, says a release from the Public Relations Department.
The decision has been taken in the wake of the landslip which now poses a threat to the Velloorkkunnam water reservoir near Moovattupuzha.
The Development Committee also said that steps should be taken to prevent accidents such as the one near Nellimattam on Friday in which five school children were crushed to death under a falling tree.

District Collector M.G. Rajamanickam said the official concerned should expedite action on complaints regarding possibilities of accidents.
The District Committee also said the Veterinary Department and local bodies should join hands to end the menace of stray
It was possible to solve the issue by appealing to animal lovers to adopt two dogs each. The Collector suggested that adoption of dogs should be encouraged and that the Veterinary Department must draw up a plan for the adoption of stray dogs.

Land reclamation
The District Collector has also issued instructions for action against those who reclaimed wetlands and paddy fields under the guise of works being undertaken for the Kochi metro rail project. It was stated during the meeting the Committee had received a complaint about reclamation of 2.30 acres on the eastern side of the Edappally railway overbridge.
