Petroleum dealers haven’t yet shaken hands with the Ernakulam District Council of Kerala Road Safety Authority in restricting fuel sale to two-wheeler riders using helmets.
“There is no deal yet,” said president of the Ernakulam District Petroleum Dealers’ Association M. Radhakrishnan here on Sunday, scorching rumours that the fuel sellers and the road safety authority had a deal.
He said: “It’s not up to the dealers to formulate sales regulations”. The government has to act first, then the oil marketing companies. “The retailers can act only on orders from the government and the oil marketing companies”.

He did not know from where rumours on a deal sprang up, though he said the Road Safety Council had approached the dealers earlier on the issue.
Advisor to the Road Safety Council George John said the dealers had agreed to attend a meeting on Monday on linking petroleum sales to the use of helmet. So far, there had not been any agreement on the matter, he said.
The meeting scheduled for Monday has been put off. Mr John claimed linking sale of petrol to use of helmet had come up before the court of law and described it as a means to nudge two-wheeler riders into wearing helmets. Linking the two would also take work load off the police, he said.
