The Navy has formalised plans to operationalise the naval detachment at Androth in the Lakshadweep Islands with a view to bolstering the security of the island territory.
The arrangements were reviewed by Vice Admiral Girish Luthra, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command, during his visit to the archipelago between March 9 and 11.

The Vice Admiral also reviewed the progress of various infrastructure projects, under way as part of the naval perspective plan.
He visited the base depot INS Dweeprakshak at Kavaratti, the naval detachment at Minicoy and the radar station at Androth.
He said it was important to strengthen the infrastructure of the islands to maintain a heightened vigil.

The Lakshadweep and Minicoy islands are strategically important and the Southern Naval Command headquartered at Kochi has been ensuring their security. When piracy was peaking in the last decade, the Navy took several steps to increase surveillance and improve the security around the area through capacity building and enhanced naval presence.
