: The Motor Vehicle Department officials are set to go knocking at the doors of residents dotting the stretch between Varapuzha and Moothakunnam junction on the National Highway 17.

The visit will be part of a unique community road safety awareness programme chalked out by the department alarmed by the rising number of accidents involving pedestrians in this 15-kilometers long stretch.

The department is currently engaged in fine tuning the campaign areas and conducting field tests through consultations with the experts and community members. `` It was a year of living dangerously when it comes to travelling along this stretch with the number of accidents reaching 17. Of this, motorcyclists and pedestrians are the most affected and our plan is to reach out to this vulnerable group’’, said Adarsh Kumar G Nair, Joint RTO, North Paravur.

The campaign is being taken up in the face of a delay in implementing the recommendations of a road safety audit conducted by the department in 2014 March, which is now under the consideration of the Kerala Road Safety Authority.
