Union Minister of State for Tourism K.J. Alphons has defended the hike in petrol prices, saying the government needs money for various projects and to extent benefits and subsidies to the weaker sections.
“The rise in fuel prices affects only vehicle owners. They should bear the rising prices of fuel for the sake of the country. Those who can afford to buy two-wheelers can afford food too. However, around 30% of the country’s population are poor.
“Vehicle owners should bear the load to support them,” he said.

Impact on vehicle owners
To a question whether the impact of fuel price hike would be felt widely, including the public transport system, and will not be confined to vehicle owners, Mr. Alphons said the impact would primarily be on vehicle owners.
“The government has been subsiding the public transport system. There has been no major rise in the prices of essential commodities in the country,” he added.

The Minister said the BJP had good prospects in the State, as it could raise its vote share from 6% to 15%.
“The party is making efforts to convince 85% of voters who haven’t voted for it and to take the message of development from the Prime Minister to them. The people of Kerala should also share the Prime Minister’s dreams,” he said.
