M.G. Road to have ‘no-horn area’

The stretch between Seemati and Maharaja’s College metro station on M.G. Road will be declared ‘no-horn area’ from Thursday.

A release issued here said the move was the result of efforts by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) , National Initiative for Safe Sound (NISS), Association of Otolaryngologists of India (AOI), Motor Vehicles Department, Kochi city police, and Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL).

KMRL managing director A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish will officially make the declaration at a function to be held at Madhava Pharmacy Junction metro parking.

A study conducted among traffic police personnel here found that 75% of them had initial symptoms of hearing loss owing to sound pollution. M.A. Nazeer, Assistant Commissioner (Traffic), Kochi, said the findings showed that the sound intensity in Kochi city should not go above 65 decibels, which is the maximum permissible limit.
