Meet on foetal surgery

: A two-day conference on foetal care and foetal surgery will be held here on Saturday and Sunday on the new techniques in the advanced foetal care developed in some of the select centres across the world.

Global experts on the foetal care and allied discplines Dr. Foong Yen Lim, Surgical Director, Foetal Care Centre Cincinnati Children’s Hospital USA, Prof. S. Suresh, Director Mediscan Chennai and Dr Uma Ram, Director Seethapathy Clinic and EVK Medical Centre, Chennai would be among the expert faculty at the conference.

The meet is being organised by Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre where a centre for open foetal surgery has begun. Open foetal surgery involves taking a baby with birth defects out of mother’s womb, performing corrective surgery and placing the foetus back inside the womb. The pregnancy is then allowed to continue. Later a caesarean section is done and the baby is delivered.

“This prevents complications to the baby from birth defect, even before delivery, thereby helping to obtain a normal baby,” said Mohan Abraham, Head of Paediatric and Foetal Surgery at Amrita.
