Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS) budget for the new financial year has lined up ambitious projects to boost value additions in the fisheries sector.
The budget, presented by P. Marapandiyan, Vice Chancellor in charge and Additional Chief Secretary to the State government, proposes advanced research to produce a wide array of value additions in the fisheries sector.
A rapid detection method will be developed for detecting the presence of toxic preservatives in fresh or chilled fish.

The university will also research on developing technology for detecting different pathotypes of e-coli from seafood based on their major virulent factors. KUFOS would encourage faculties to produce more research papers in advanced areas of fisheries and allied sectors, said a statement issued by the university here on Thursday.
The university budget also envisages projects to standardise academic inputs. In order to improve the quality of academic activities, KUFOS will tie up with foreign universities and research institutions for the purposes of academic exchange programmes, collaborative research works and student exchanges.
The university will forge linkage with Bournemouth University of the United Kingdom; De Palmas Gran Canaria University, Spain and the University of Tubingen, Germany.

New disciplines
Quality facilities will be provided to students to promote research temperament and to improve academic skills. In addition, new disciplines will be added to the existing massive open online courses (MOOC). The budget has allocated funds to construct various infrastructure such as academic complex, seminar complex, common amenity centre, fish hatchery, flat complex for employees and indoor substation.
