The patron in V.R. Krishna Iyer to whom Kochiites could turn for the redressal of civic problems is no more. The booming metropolis owes a lot to the champion crusader in the eminent jurist for some of the changes it has witnessed from time to time.
From the people’s agitation for the government take-over of Cooperative Medical College to the development of the oncology wing of the Ernakulam General Hospital, Mr. Iyer will be remembered long for being the leading light in providing access to quality medical care, especially to the downtrodden.
“It was under his leadership that the Cancer Relief Society organised funds to set up the cobalt tele-therapy and mammography units at the General Hospital.

He was a great humanist and worked tirelessly for providing help to the needy,” recalled Dr. C.K. Ramachandran, a long-time friend. K.R. Viswambharan, former Ernakulam District Collector, referred to his undying commitment to the causes he undertook while asserting that the government take over of the Cooperative Medical College would have remained a dream if not for the rigour with which Krishna Iyer pursued it. “He instilled an undying spirit in thousands by taking up issues and following it up meticulously,” he said. Mr. Iyer also led the vigorous campaign for setting up the Cancer Hospital and Research Institute near the Government Medical College at Kalamassery.
Senior journalist Ravi Kuttikad said that Krishna Iyer never said no to people who approached him for help. Author of the book Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer: Janahrudayangalil Oru Nyayaadhipan , Mr. Kuttikad said the jurist would always be remembered for his compassion for mankind. “He will continue to live in the minds of thousands thanks to the unique way in which the renowned jurist influenced our lives,” he said.
