The Department of Local Self-Government has admitted that all is not well at the waste dump site of the Kochi Corporation at Brahmapuram.

A report submitted before the Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal by the Additional Chief Secretary of the department pointed out that the windrow composting plant at the site is in a dilapidated condition.

So the Corporation has decided to set up a new windrow composting plant. An amount of ₹1 crore has been included in the Plan fund of 2021-22. The council has approved the plan layout presented by the agency selected to execute the work, it said.

Since the land is marshy, the facility is proposed with redeemed piles and steel structure. The department authorities said that the work will commence as soon as possible.

Stating that there is an issue related to the leachate treatment at Brahmapuram, the report said that the Health Standing Committee had asked the Suchitwa Mission to construct the leachate treatment plant.

The government agency said that it would take up the work only after the completion of the construction of the collapsed roof of the composting plant and after assessing the actual quantity of leachate generated.

The leachate treatment plant construction will be taken up along with the new composting plant, it said. 

The work on the new leachate treatment plant will start after the completion of the bioremediation project. The report claimed that the biomining work at the site, which began in January this year, is expected to be over in nine months.
