Kerala to review safety of dams

The Kerala Water Resources Department will review the safety aspects of all dams under it.

A conference convened by Minister for Water Resources P. J. Joseph took the decision in view of the overtopping of the Pazhassi Dam early this week.

It decided to replace all the shutters of the dam urgently and entrust the work to public sector undertaking Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Company. Rs. 7 crore had been sanctioned for the work.

The Minister said that all shutters of the Pazhassi Dam spillway would be replaced in a year. Steps would also be taken for strengthening of the Chimoni Dam. The IIT, Chennai, would be contracted to conduct studies for this purpose and provide technical advice. The Chief Engineer (Projects) B. Jayaram would leave for Chennai once the project report is received.

Mr. Joseph said that the measures would also be taken to strengthen the Moolathala Dam in Palakkad district.

The conference was attended among others by Principal Secretary (Water Resources) V. J. Kurian and Chief Engineer (Projects).
