The Office of the Commissioner of Customs has said that the drive-through scanner deployed at the International Container Transshipment Terminal on Vallarpadam island complies with the standard set by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB).

A press release from the office on Thursday said the scanner was deployed in October 2018 and was capable of scanning 180 containers per hour. The X-ray works for around 13 seconds during the scanning process, and it starts only after the machine detects at least a gap of 50 cm between the driver’s cabin and the container. The drivers’ cabin is never scanned.

The release was issued in the wake of apprehensions raised by lorry drivers that the scanner caused health issues. A pool of drivers will now be deployed to drive the lorries through the scanning cabin.
