Govt. seeks nod for varsity off-campus centres

Conditional clearance for 2nd and 3rd-year students

The government has requested Governor P. Sathasivam to give conditional clearance for the closed down off-campus centres of the Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) to conduct classes for their second and third-year students.

The move came after the Governor’s office asked the Vice Chancellor to explain the contradiction in the varsity proposal to permit the managements of the closed down off-campus centres to complete the classes for the second and third-year students.

The Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the varsity, had directed the MGU authorities to close down off-campus centres functioning without government sanction.

The Hindu has learnt that the government’s proposal placed before the Governor stated that the university will sign an agreement with the government assuring that the classes will be run at facilities within its jurisdiction. No new student registrations will be allowed. The off-campus centres will have to finish the entire process within two years.

Franchisees

The varsity had earlier informed the Governor that they had already taken steps to avoid franchisees in distance education as directed by the UGC. It had also pointed out that steps were taken to take education to the doorstep of candidates of the closed down centres to complete their course.
