The special court hearing cases of the Central Bureau of Investigation here on Wednesday granted bail to Harris Abdul Rahman, who is accused of smuggling gold from the Gulf into the country through Nedumbassery international airport.
The CBI argued that the investigation was at a crucial stage and Harris’ presence was important to the case. But the court found that Harris’ detention was not required any longer and granted bail with stringent conditions.
He was asked to sign a bond for Rs.30,000 and surrender his passport. He has been asked to stay within the limits of Kochi Corporation for three weeks and be present before the investigating officer at fixed times.

Harris, along with his wife Arifa, and Asifa Veerappoyil, was detained at Nedumbassery airport in September this year after the women were found to be smuggle in 10 kg of gold each. The CBI has accused Customs officials of abetting the smuggling.
Harris will continue in judicial custody as he is yet to get bail in the case filed by the Customs Department on the same incident.
