GH prescribes antidote to unhealthy food habits

Awareness classes will be on lifestyle diseases arising out of modern living and what one needs to do to have healthy life parameters

The dietary department of the General Hospital will observe National Nutritional Week starting Saturday with an elaborate awareness programme.

Starting with a seminar on ‘Obesity and fat monitoring,’ the week-long programme will conclude with a healthy food festival on the hospital premises that will be open to the public. Touching on various factors that affect nutrition and in turn the general health, the programme aims at creating awareness among the people on what constitutes healthy food. There will be recipe demonstrations at the food festival and healthy snacks available for the public.

The habit of eating oily snacks regularly is bad for health. The seminar on obesity will provide an insight into what oily food and unhealthy eating habits can do to the human body.

How the body tries to maintain a balance on its own and how fat gets deposited in the tissues will also be explained.

Awareness classes will be on lifestyle diseases arising out of modern living and what one needs to do to have healthy life parameters.

An important session will be classes for mothers in the hospital on ‘Infant and young child nutrition’.

According to nutritional consultant Mumtaz Khalid Ismail, the period from conception to 24 months of the child, which would be about 1,000 days, nutrition is the most important factor in the child’s development.

Another session will on anaemic mothers. How women need to take care of their health will be the focus of the session.

The last day will witness a ‘Healthy Food Festival’ that will coincide with Hospital Day celebrations.

A health drink and snacks will be prepared by the dietary department that is organising the programmes with support from British Biologicals.
