Disparity in index marks of candidates for the same course

The rank lists published by two autonomous colleges in the city for its postgraduate programmes have come under the scanner for marked differences in the index marks of aspirants, who had applied for a similar course in both the institutions.

Even though the autonomous college managements enjoy the freedom to conduct their own admission process, they have to follow the eligibility and admission norms prescribed by the Mahatma Gandhi University. Interestingly, classes for the postgraduate programmes at Sacred Heart College in Thevara and St. Teresa’s College began on Monday.

A closer look at the rank lists published on the websites of these two autonomous colleges revealed that the index mark of several candidates, who had applied for the same course varied considerably. For instance, there was a difference of over 35 points in the index mark of a candidate who figured in the general merit category for M.A. Eng. language and literature in both the colleges.

Asked about the differences in the index marks, Fr. Prashant Palackappillil, Principal of Sacred Heart College, said that a normalisation process was carried out while arriving at the index marksSr. Vinitha, Principal of St. Teresa’s, said that they had conducted the admission as per the norms prescribed by the varsity.

However, the index marks of several other aspirants remain the same in rank lists published by both colleges. The index marks of several candidates figuring in the rank lists of the M.A. Economics programme and M.Sc Physics were more or less the same barring a few cases, where there was a difference of one or two points in index marks put by the colleges.
