April 06, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 07:09 am IST - KOCHI:

Parents should try to instil scientific temper among their children aimed at moulding a self-reliant generation for the country, said J. Letha, Vice-Chancellor of Cochin University of Science and Technology. In her inaugural address at the “Bala Sasthra Vijnanotsavam,” the finale of the International Year of Light (IYL) fest here on Tuesday, Dr. Letha said that every individual could play a role to contribute to the scientific world. Efforts must be made to inculcate scientific temper among the children, she said.

Suresh Nair, chairman, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Kerala, presided over the function. The journey towards educating children about the science of light and its various fields and its extensive use in healthcare, communication, computing, lighting and sensing began with the U.N. General Assembly declaring the year 2015 as the International Year of Light, he said.

V. K. Damodaran, co-ordinator, IYL, Kerala, said that the 157 talented children selected from 14 districts in the preliminary rounds would stay for three days on the Cusat campus and engage in problem solving and work on projects of each district at Photonics Laboratory and Centre for Science in Society. The projects would be assessed district-wise and the students individually, based on their performance. The participants would have the opportunity to get noticed by eminent scientists, professors, engineers, and entrepreneurs, who will stay with them and mentor them.
