The civil works for the Kochi Metro Rail will begin by May-end, Principal Adviser to the DMRC E. Sreedharan has said.
He was speaking to mediapersons here on Thursday.
The DMRC is learnt to have awarded the work to build the viaduct and metro stations in the Kalamassery-international stadium stretch to L & T. Works on the three other stretches will be awarded shortly. The signing of an MoU with KMRL is a pre-requisite to finalising the contracts.

Earlier in the day, Mr Sreedharan visited the KSRTC bus stand end of Salim Rajan overbridge. The bridge is expected to be inaugurated on May 12.
In the meantime, the DMRC is understood to have decided on transporting mud to fill its coach-repair yard at Muttom through a new road in Aluva, beginning from Friday. The agency has been permitted to transport mud only during night.
Earlier, Naval Armament Depot had reportedly expressed reservation on transporting the mud through its premises during the daytime. The DMRC had promised to repair the road if it suffered any damage due to frequent movement of lorries.

Sources said that the DMRC has to fill the 48-acre yard at a height of a metre, prior to the monsoon. The agency has been handed over 35 acres of land, till date.
“The work requires the dumping of 400 to 500 loads of mud daily and can be completed only if we are permitted to transport it for a few hours during day,” the source said This apart, a few residents have opposed the sourcing of mud from Puthen Cruz and Pattimattom during night. These hassles had resulted in the agency being able to transport just around 40 tipper-lorry loads per day, sources said.
