The Thrissur District Panchayat has set a record by utilising 84 per cent of the fund and implementing more than 1,000 development projects in the last year, President K.V. Dasan has said.
Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, he said it was the success of the ‘Integrated Development Method' in which projects were implemented with the coordination of gram, block and district panchayats.
“In all, 400 drinking water projects were implemented last year. Construction of flats for the rehabilitation of families belonging to the Scheduled Caste communities, distribution of financial assistance to panchayats for scientific management of waste, drinking water projects for 200 anganawadis and Rs.7 crore assistance for 2,000 houses under the Indira Awaaz Yojana were some of the integrated projects implemented last years,” Mr. Dasan said.

The district panchayat was planning to spend funds under eight development sectors under the 12th Plan, he said. “More than 50 panchayats have come forward so far to co-operate with district panchayat in the integrated plan.”
The seed farms under the district panchayat would be modernised. Gurukulam project to provide quality education for all students would be implemented in schools under the panchayat, he said.
The district panchayat took the responsibility for not finishing road development works. Repair works of 70-odd roads could not be started due to lack of co-operation between contractors, officials and elected representatives, he said. The works had been handed over to State Nirmithi Kendra now and would be done under the direct monitoring of the district panchayat, he said.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the dream project of the district panchayat to turn Thrissur the first eco-friendly district in the State at a function to be held at Venkindangu panchayat in the second week of April.
