Customs summons in gold smuggling case

The Cochin Customs has issued summons to two Kasaragod natives in connection with the seizure of 7 kg gold worth Rs. 2 crore from a luxury car imported from Dubai through Kochi port.

Customs officials said summons has been issued against Shabeer Ali of Kanhangad and Siyad of Neeleswaram, who imported the car in the name of a Mangalore native on February 12.

The duo is reportedly running a computer hardware shop in Dubai.

During interrogation, the Mangalore native told the Customs that he had been not aware of the metal concealed inside the car.

The gold in the form of 14 crude gold chain of 24 carat each weighing 500g were concealed in the fuel tank of a Mini Cooper bearing Dubai registration number.

The car was imported under the Carnet De Passage scheme, a duty free import facility provided to tourists.
