A Syndicate meeting of the Cochin University of Science and Technology held here on Saturday decided to suspend S. K. Pyarilal, Associate Professor in the Department of Ship Technology, on charges of declining to perform exam-related duties including question paper setting and valuation.
Vice-Chancellor J. Letha said that the meet resolved to appoint an inquiry commission headed by a former judge to probe the complaints submitted against the faculty member by the Head of the Department. A decision on why further action should not be taken against him will be taken on the basis of the report submitted by the single-member commission, she said. A Syndicate meeting held on July 31, 2014 had approved the memo of charges against Mr. Pyarilal and the statement of allegation. The Controller of Examinations had asked the faculty member (August 22, 2014) why disciplinary action should not be taken against him as per the Act and statutes of the varsity.
In his reply, Mr. Pyarilal had said that “if the same teachers are setting up the question papers, then they can give possible “tips”. If the same teachers are evaluating the answer papers, then they can make the valuation liberal and even favour some of the students”.

The Syndicate also decided to drop the charges against Josephkutty Jacob, Associate Professor and former Principal at the Cochin University College of Engineering at Kuttanad. He was removed from the Principal post in 2012 based on a report submitted by a syndicate sub-committee, which alleged that he had submitted fake experience certificate while applying for Reader post in 2000. The Syndicate meet on Saturday dismissed the allegations stating that his appointment as Reader was ratified by the selection committee concerned. It was also observed that the allegations were raised against the faculty member by incompetent people.
