Cusat student held on charge of assault

An engineering student was arrested by the Kalamassery police in connection with the assault on a classmate of his.

Jibin Zacharia, 23, of Vadakumchery and four others allegedly attacked Bidhun, 21, of Perumbavoor, as he was riding a motorcycle on Tuesday evening. Both of them were fifth semester students of B.Tech (IT branch) at the Cochin University of Science and Technology.

Jibin was produced before the Aluva Judicial First Class Magistrate–II and remanded. Search is on for the other four students involved in the case.

Paan masala seized

The shadow wing of the City Police seized more than 12,000 packets of paan masala worth nearly Rs. 80,000 and arrested one person. The stuff was found kept in cartons and hidden in a car and was being taken to Pathanamthitta without remitting sales tax. Sumesh, 29, of Pathanamthitta was arrested by the police after finding him in suspicious conditions at Marine Drive. Sasidharan, Intelligence Officer, Commercial Taxes, who reached the spot on being informed about the shadow operations, levied a fine of Rs. 25,040 for tax evasion.

Suspect held

A suspect wanted in many cases of poaching wild animals and killing an elephant for ivory was arrested by Tripunithura police on Tuesday.

Vijayan, 35, also known as Jayan of Sasthavilasam, Kothamedu, Pallivasal, Devikulam, was leading a group that shot a tusker down near Gundumala in 2008.

The suspect was arrested from near Tripunithura railway station by a team led by M. Baiju Poulose, Circle Inspector, and P.R. Santhosh, sub-inspector, after they followed up a tip-off received by City Police Commissioner M.R. Ajith Kumar.
