Cusat probe into B.Tech. transfers

More than 120 students have been transferred since 2011

More than 120 student transfers among its own and affiliated engineering colleges of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) will come under the scanner of the varsity’s high-level probe into the ‘out-of-turn’ transfers of its B. Tech students since 2011.

This includes 17 transfers involving students from its Cochin University College of Engineering, Kuttanad (Cucek) to the School of Engineering (SOE) on the main campus at Thrikkakara.

All the students who got transferred from Cucek to SOE in 2014-15 were in their fourth and fifth semesters.

The Hindu had reported earlier that the probe was launched following alleged irregularities in the ‘out-of-turn’ transfer of students.

The varsity had received complaints that students, who had figured lower in the merit list (in the engineering entrance) had enjoyed the benefit of the ‘out-of-turn’ transfers.

The Hindu , 21 students in semesters between four and eight got transfers over the last four years.

The findings come at a time when the varsity has decided to restrict transfer of B. Tech students in the third semester from now onwards.

Interestingly, students had even got transfers in their final semester as per the official records.

Among the 120 plus students who got transfers since 2011-12, 14 belonged to self-financing engineering colleges affiliated to Cusat.

Majority of them got transferred to the engineering colleges under the Institute of Human Resource Development (IHRD) recognised by Cusat.

Most of the students who got transfers had enrolled for Computer Science (CS), Information Technology (IT), Electronics and Communication (EC) and Electronics and Electrical Engineering (EEE) courses.

Of the 17 students who got transfer from Cucek to SOE, seven had taken up the IT branch followed by CS (four); EC and EEE (three each).

Official records also pointed out that three students admitted in the payment category later got it converted to the free category in 2013.
