Chandy to launch Aadhar registration

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will launch the district-level registration for Unique Identification Number card (Aadhar) at Karukutty on November 22, said a statement issued by the Department of Information and Public Relations.

The Karukutty grama panchayat has been chosen for the district-level launch because about 95 per cent of the population in the panchayat has already registered for Aadhar, the press statement said.

It said that wages for those participating in the Prime Minister Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme is already being distributed using the UID provided under Aadhar registration.

District collector P. I. Sheik Pareed said that the district administration expected to complete Aadhar registration for the entire district by the end of December this year. Around 79 per cent of the population in Ernakulam have already completed registration for obtaining the unique identification number, the press release added.

Work on the unique identification number registration process in the district was reviewed here at a meeting convened by the Information Technology Secretary P. H. Kurien.

The District Collector; Additional District Magistrate B. Ramachandran; project director Vinodini and officials attended the meeting.

Registration for obtaining the unique identification number can be done at approved enrolment centres run by Akshaya and Keltron at different locations, the press release said.

Those wishing to enrol for the unique identification number will have to produce proof of residence and identity. Mr. Kurien said that initially pension payment and payment of wages for those engaged in the rural employment guarantee scheme will be done on the basis of the Aadhar card. Soon other benefits will also be routed through banks using the Aadhar card.

Those wishing to register for the Aadhar card have been directed to provide their bank account numbers at the time of registration. Those who do not have bank accounts will be able to open bank accounts free of cost at the place of registration.
