Body found

: The body of a 65-year-old person, who allegedly committed suicide was found in Kochi backwaters near the Ernakulam boat jetty on Monday. Police identified the deceased as Abubacker A.J., a native of South Kalamassery. The incident came to light around 12 noon after locals noticed the body near the boat jetty. The Ernakulam central police fished out the body. Abubacker had developed a chronic lungs-related ailment recently and was in a state of depression. The body has been handed over to the deceased’s relatives after post mortem.

Two held for ganja possession

: The city police on Monday arrested two persons including a 48-year-old woman on charges of ganja sale and seized 50 grams of ganja from their possession. The accused were identified as Vimala, a native of Udayanagar colony and Thomson, 28 of Cherthala. The accused were nabbed following a tip-off that they had been selling ganja to college students in the city. The police also seized an autorickshaw used by the duo to transport ganja. The accused have been booked under provisions of the under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

Rights Commission sitting

: As many as 23 petitions were settled during a sitting by the State Human Rights Commission Chairman J.B. Koshy here on Monday. A total of 65 petitions came up for consideration of the Commission during the sitting, held at the Ernakulam District Collectorate in the morning.
