Arrangements in place for women’s wall

Prominent women leaders, writers, artists to participate

A rally being taken out in Thrissur by the UDF district coordination committee in protest against the alleged organisation of women’s wall at public expense.

About three lakh women are expected to be part of the women’s wall in Ernakualm on January 1.

The wall’s formation in the district would be from Pongam to Aroor, covering a distance of 49 km, said C.N. Mohanan, district secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). “About 50 lakh women are expected to participate in the programme aimed at resurrecting the renaissance values in the State.”

Mr. Mohanan said the women participating in the wall in Ernakulam would gather along the national highway by 3 p.m. A trial would be held at 3.30 p.m. and a pledge would be taken by 4 p.m. Public meetings would be held at Edappally, Kalamassery, Aluva Companyppady, Paravur Kavala, Athani, Angamaly, Chakkaraparambu, Kundannur, and Madavana as part of the programme.

State Women’s Commission chairperson M.C. Josephine would be the first link of the wall at the northern side of the district while T.V. Anitha, member of Ernakulam district panchayat, would be the connecting link at the southern side. Besides State and district women leaders, the women’s wall in the district would witness the participation of people from various walks of life including Sarojini Balanandan, Subhashini Ali, M. Leelavathi, Aruna Roy, KPAC Lalitha, Vijayalakshmi, Mercykuttan, Rima Kallingal, and Geethu Mohandas.

The CPI(M) had organised a vehicle rally, carol, mass run, flash mob, street play, women’s walk and processions as part of the campaign to popularise the women’s wall programme.

In Kozhikode

Staff Reporter in Kozhikode writes: Addressing the media, Minister for Excise and Labour T.P. Ramakrishnan said the women’s wall would be formed in Kozhikode district covering a total of 76 km from Azhiyur to Vaidyarangadi. Steps were being taken to ensure the participation of three lakh women in the district, he said.

“In every 5 km, there will be ambulance service ready for attending any emergency case. The women will form the trial chain by 3.45 p.m. The State-wide chain will be a reality by 4 p.m., and the campaign will end by 4.15 p.m.,” Mr. Ramakrishnan said.
