On the occasion of World Food Day on October 16, the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), has said that the number of hungry people in the world has increased by 75 million in 2007.

The FAO food price index rose above 50 per cent from mid-2007 to mid-2008. Global cereal prices are still more than 63 per cent higher than they were in 2005, according to the International Monetary Fund.

The global economic slowdown has made matters worse.
