Sonia, Rahul to attend INTUC national meet in Kochi

Congress President Sonia Gandhi and General Secretary Rahul Gandhi would attend the four-day national conference of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) to be held here from October 9.

Sonia Gandhi will inaugurate the delegates’ meeting on October 10 while her son Rahul Gandhi will inaugurate an international seminar on ‘World Economy slowdown and its effect on Labour market’ on October 12, INTUC Kerala President R. Chandrashekaran told reporters here.

He said around nine Union Ministers, including Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Defence Minister A. K Antony, Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi, Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and Labour Minister Mallikarjun Kharge, would attend different sessions of the conference.

Over 6,000 delegates were expected to participate in the conference being held for the first time in Kerala, he said adding the new All India INTUC President and other office-bearers would be elected, in the 29th plenary session.

Mr. Chandrasekharan said the conference would have a meeting of the industrial federations and in the delgates’ meeting discussions would centre on the need to amend the existing labour laws and necessity for incorporating new provisions.

He said the representatives of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and International Trade Union Congress (ITUC) would be addressing the delegates.

In all 40 foreign delegates from 13 countries including the US, UK, Italy, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Ukraine and Japan would be participating, he said.
