The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) will organise ‘people's marches' from August 2 to 6 demanding that the “oppressed in the State should not be denied democratic rights.”
K.P. Mohammed Sherif, State president of the party, said here on Wednesday that both the Left Democratic Front and the United Democratic Front were trying to gain political mileage by coming out with statements against the empowerment of the oppressed.
Condemning the attack on T.J. Joseph, professor at Newman College, Thodupuzha, he said the party was not involved in any unlawful activities. However, he alleged, the police and the government were trying to portray parties like the SDPI as terrorist groups.

Mr. Sherif said the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was making an effort to win the hearts of the majority communities by making statements against those who supported the causes of the minorities. He said the move to appease the majority communities would not work. The party should show the courage to stand with the oppressed, he said.
He said the SDPI would emerge stronger after the civic elections by exposing the “double standards adopted by both the LDF and the UDF.”
