The Kozhikode–based Baby Memorial Hospital (BMH) has announced a Rs. 1,200 – crore project for a world class hospital and health city at Kakkanad in Kochi. The proposed Baby Memorial Hospital in Kochi would meet the standards prescribed by the Joint Commission International (JCI) in the United States, Dr. K.G. Alexander, Chairman and Managing Director of Baby Memorial Hospital, announced in Kozhikode on Tuesday. The lead players in the hospital-health city project in Kochi are actor Mohanlal, Mr. K. Madhavan, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Asianet Communications, Dr. Nishith A. Choksy, Head, Interventional Cardiology Department of Medical Centre, Detroit, USA, Dr. G. Krishna Kumar, gastroenterologist and Chairman of Med Vision, USA, Joseph Chalil, a U.S.– based clinical consultant and Directors of Baby Marine Group of Companies.
A 700 - bed hospital, seven lakh sq ft in area and equipped with 30 operation suites and 2000 strong staff, would be established in its first phase at a cost of Rs. 450 crores. The health city would come up in the second phase.
Dr. Alexander said though the new hospital would have world class facilities that would meet the expectations of doctors and patients in any part of the globe, these would not be restricted to the affluent class alone. Financial background alone would not be the criteria for admitting patients.

The hospital-healthy project would be in tune with the growth of the nation as a major destination in the field of medical tourism, Dr Alexander said. Baby Memorial Hospital in Kozhikode launched in 1987 by Dr. Alexander in memory of his father K.V. Varghese alias Baby is already a major multi-speciality tertiary care hospital with modern facilities. Its bed strength was being increased to 800, so that BMH would be the biggest hospital in North Kerala, Dr. Alexander announced.
