A second-year MBBS student from Kannur, Shamna Thasneen, who was suffering from fever, died on Monday while undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital here.
Daughter of Abu T. from Sivapuram, Mattannur, the student, who had fever for the last three to four days, had consulted the General Medicine professor, who admitted her for suspected dengue fever. Blood tests were conducted, and an injection of cephalosporin group was administered after the test dose.
Medical College Principal V.K. Sreekala said no drug reaction was found after the test dose. However, the student’s condition worsened, and she was put on ventilator after she collapsed. Dengue fever was ruled out on the basis of the blood investigation results, she said. Her relatives sought to shift her to a private hospital near Aluva after she was put on ventilator.
It could also be a case of myocardial infarction caused by some virus, according to the hospital superintendent and Principal. The parents of the student have been informed and further action will be taken accordingly, she said.
Meanwhile, there are allegations of a delay of 20 minutes in admitting the girl to the ICU after she fainted. “There was no staff to take her to the ICU, and after a while, the students themselves took the stretchers from another floor and moved her to the ICU. But critical time was lost,” sources said.
