With Kerala topping the South Indian states in incidence of cardiac attacks, a massive effort is on to prepare a registry of heart patients.
The Kerala ACS (Acute Coronary Syndrome) Registry, being compiled by the State chapter of the Cardiological Society of India (CSI), was first of its kind project in the country, CSI officials said.
The society has completed the data collection of the community research project ‘Acute Coronary Syndrome’ with data being collected from 129 hospitals across the State since the last two years, Dr. A.K. Abraham told reporters.

The hospitals included are government, private, rural and urban, having intensive cardiac care units. Data of 25,514 heart attack patients have been collected and the analysis of the same was in progress.
Preliminary results of the project would be discussed at the three-day CSI National conference to be held here from Dec 3, Abraham, Organising Chairman of the conference, told reporters.
Studies had shown that in Kottayam, about nine per cent cases of heart attacks have been reported from those below 45 years and 2.5 per cent in the age group of 40 and below. These figures were comparable to those from the developed countries which were alarming, Dr. K. Venugopal, Organsing Secretary, said.

Diabetes, hypertension, and life style changes were attributed to the increasing cases from the state.
Nearly 4,000 delegates, including some from abroad were expected to participate in the conference whose theme was ’Prevention to Intervention’.
