Cranking camera is not in their syllabus.

But higher secondary students of commerce and humanities batches of S.N.V. Sanskrit Higher Secondary School, North Paravur, are busy these days shooting a documentary. And their object is purely academic.

It is based on the lesson Rural Development from the economics textbook of first-year higher secondary students. The innovative learning process is part of ‘learn with fun’ project developed by Pramod Malyankara, an economics teacher at the school.

“No amount of lecturing can substitute what students can learn through seeing things for themselves and that is at the core of the project,” said Mr. Pramod who has been a member of the State resource team for economics in higher secondary for over a decade and is a master trainer.

So, live videos and visuals are shot to drive home various economic concepts ranging from sustainable development and marketing to waste management. These visuals are then mixed with supporting voice-overs to further elaborate on the concepts. Once the documentary is finished, the CDs of it will be distributed to economics students free of cost. “We are planning to bring out the CD by August. Playing the CD will leave little room for lecturing as it will be self-descriptive,” Mr. Pramod said.
