Farmer’s wife pushes daughter to death over mounting debt trap

Distraught over mounting debts and burgeoning financial problems, a 30-year-old woman pushed her three-year-old daughter to death in a checkdam and later committed suicide by jumping into the waters along with her son at Mohammadabad in Ranga Reddy district.

After pushing Poornima into the waters on Thursday night, B. Mallamma, wife of a farmer, ended her life by jumping into the waters clutching her son Naveen (7). Villagers saw Poornima’s body floating in the checkdam on Friday morning. Later, the bodies were retrieved.

Mohammadabad SI K. Venkataiah said Mallamma took Rs. 40,000 loan from her parents and dug up a borewell in their four-acre land in the village. Mallamma’s husband Srisailam spent over Rs. 1 lakh on the borewell for a better yield but he incurred crop losses. To overcome the swelling debts, Mallamma sought financial assistance from her parents. She didn’t get any help. Depressed over this, Mallamma took the extreme step, Mr. Venkataiah explained.
