Takes part in symposium on ballistics being held in India for the first time

DRDO chairman G. Satheesh Reddy arrives to deliver a lecture as part of the 31st International Symposium on Ballistics-2019 in the city on Monday.

There is an urgent need to innovate and develop disruptive technologies as it would provide the basis for next generation effective, precise, accurate and safe systems, said DRDO chairman G. Satheesh Reddy, who is also the chairman of Aeronautical Society of India, on Monday.

Participating in the 31st International Symposium on Ballistics-2019 in association with the International Ballistics Society HICC, he said the “symposium will fuel the growth of research and development in niche technologies associated with ballistics in India”.

As the event is being held in the country for the first time, he expected the meet to provide immense exposure and opportunity to address issues in the areas of launch dynamics and interior ballistics, exterior ballistics, terminal ballistics, explosion mechanics, vulnerability and survivability and many other ongoing related areas of research.

Nearly 500 delegates from 30 different countries are participating in the symposium. Member of NITI Aayog V.K. Saraswat said ballistics being a very specialised technological field, requires indepth understanding and state-of-the-art facilities for development and testing together with stringent safety requirements.

Science of ballistics has always been a never-ending fantasy of the scientific community because of the mechanics of launching, flight behaviour and impact dynamics of accelerating projectiles, said High Energy Materials Research Laboratory director K.P.S. Murthy.

President of the International Ballistics Society Sidney Chocron and technical specialist officer of Warhead Technology Munitions Safety Information Analysis Centre, NATO HQ, Ernest Baker, also spoke. Top defence and aeronautical scientists as well as industry representatives are participating in the meeting.
