The Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TSSPDCL) has bagged ‘IPPAI Power Award-2017’ under ‘innovation’ category in recognition of its various innovative initiatives taken up as part of energy-efficiency programmes such as distributed solar generation, agricultural demand-side management, distribution of LED bulbs, installation of high-voltage distribution systems, and reduction of distribution losses.
The award ceremony is scheduled to be held during the 18th Regulators & Policy-Makers Retreat at Belagavi in Karnataka State on October 28.
The award is expected to be received by Chairman and Managing Director of TSSPDCL G. Raghuma Reddy. The power utility has bagged several other awards this year for its efficiency in performance.

Largest bid
Officials of the power utility said they were following an innovative approach in adding solar capacity in decentralised distributed generation model to achieve high quantum of solar capacity additions in the State and also to reduce the carbon footprints. As part of the initiative, the TSSPDCL had conducted a bid process for procuring 500MW, 515MW and 2,000MW and successfully closed the tenders process.
“Procuring 2,000MW was the largest such bid in solar power procurement in a single tender across the country. As a result, about 2,059MW of solar power has been synchronised with the grid so afar and an additional 1,050MW is expected be added by the end of the financial year,” the TSSPDCL officials said.

Saving energy
Similarly, in the distribution of LED bulbs for energy conservation, the power utility had already distributed 2.6 lakh LED bulbs to consumers with an estimated energy saving of 34 million units (MUs) per year. Under HVDS, a total of 51,686 transformers were installed to reduce distribution losses and theft of energy in agricultural supply, saving about 300 MU energy a year and ₹135 crore in monetary terms.
By replacing the existing conductor with the large-size one, the utility had reduced the distribution losses by 1.5% approximately, saving 560 MUs per year or ₹226 crore.
