Telanga Rashtra Samithi MLA A. Jeevan Reddy won a pat from Health Minister Laxma Reddy for pledging his organs under Jeevandan programme.

Mr. Jeevan Reddy raised the question in the Telangana Assembly here on Friday during the Question Hour in response to the programme to promote Cadaver organ donations and transplantation in the State. He said that due to lack of facilities in the district centres, organ donations could not be promoted. He disclosed that he had pledged his organs under Jeevandan and emphasised that awareness should be generated among people in all the districts.

Another TRS MLA D. Chinnaiah said that because of superstitions many do not come forward to donate organs. One brain dead person could donate seven organs and give a fresh lease of life to seven persons. In all the district hospitals, awareness should be created on importance of organ donation, he said.

Dr. Laxma Reddy appreciating Jeevan Reddy’s gesture, appealed to all the MLAs to create awareness about the Jeevandan scheme in their constituencies. He said that organ transplant surgeries were now being taken up in Osmania and Gandhi General Hospitals in Hyderabad. Once ICUs were set up in Area hospitals also, there would be scope to give boost to organ donation.
