The Telangana Government will institute awards for websites adhering to guidelines prescribed by the Centre as well as other best practices laid down by standards bodies, Principal Secretary IT Jayesh Ranjan said here on Tuesday.

The senior official said that this highlighting the role of websites had come to assume importance as face of the institution. “In modern times, websites are the face of the Government,” he said, addressing a workshop on ‘Making government websites discoverable and mobile-friendly’.

The workshop was organised by Google India in association with Telangana’s IT, Electronics and Communications Department.

With Telangana ranked number one in Ease of Doing Business index and the interest it was creating globally, provision of all the services and information online that hitherto were available offline has become utmost priority, Mr. Ranjan said.

“Since usage of mobiles will go up dramatically in near future and beyond we are now taking up m-Governance seriously and try to achieve pre-eminent position in that segment as well,” he added.

A release on the workshop said Director, Digital Media, Dileep Konatham, outlined the importance of making government websites mobile and search engine-friendly. The Department has taken up GIGW Compliance Project that aimed to make all the government and its constituents’ websites user-friendly.
