The State Government is actively considering a proposal to set up a driving training and research institute of international standards at Hayatnagar on the city outskirts.
The proposal comes in the light of significant demand from youth, particularly those aspiring to go abroad, for a recognised institution that could issue them international driving licences valid across the globe, Transport Minister P. Mahender Reddy told the Legislative Assembly on Monday.
During the Question Hour, the Minister said the Central Government had earlier sanctioned one International Driving Training and Research Institute under the XII plan. The Government had allotted 20 acres for the institute that was set up at Mandepalli village of Rajanna-Sircilla district.

The project, involving an estimated ₹16.48 crore, had been taken up under public private partnership mode in association with Ashok Leyland.
The Central Government was bearing the entire cost of the project and had released ₹1.49 crore of which ₹79 lakh had been spent so far. Training courses including HMV driving instructor specialisation course, induction training in HMV and LMV categories and other customer-centric courses were being offered at the institute. The institute was being equipped to provide training to 18,450 people every year in different courses.
