Status of minor tanks improves

‘Affected standing crop can be rejuvenated if the rains stop’

As the rains continue to lash different parts of Telangana, mostly in northern parts for the last few days, the overall rainfall deficit for the State in the ongoing south-west monsoon season has come to naught. The State faced a deficit rainfall of 20% compared to the normal precipitation till August 8.

The rains have also resulted in good inflows into several medium irrigation projects and minor irrigation tanks, which otherwise were presenting a bleak picture till the beginning of this month. According to Irrigation Department officials, 21 out of 35 medium irrigation projects in the State have received surplus water already and they were maintaining either full reservoir level or discharging surplus flood downstream.

The status of minor irrigation tanks has also improved to a large extent, particularly in the Godavari basin, with a majority of them receiving either surplus or near-surplus water.
