His son-in-law Ram Reddy, who accompanied the man, also sustained injuries before he ran for his life, according to the police.

According to a preliminary investigation, the police suspect an existing dispute in the family over sharing of the 2.5 acre agricultural land of Govinda Reddy, among his sons and a daughter.

The deceased apparently wanted the property shared in four equal parts among his three children and a part for himself. But challenging the decision, the brothers had gone to the court three years ago, it was learnt.

The police said it was found that the victim, since last week, was making arrangements to transfer the property as per his decision.

He had earlier approached the sub- registrar office, and on Wednesday afternoon he was at the Nagarjuna Grameena Vikas Bank in Haliya along with his son-in-law to clear the dues to release the pattadar passbooks, the police said.

Soon after he exited the bank, the two brothers attacked their father with a heavy metal rod and sticks causing severe head injury, and he died on the spot.
