The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the city police on Sunday brought Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) bomb expert Abdul Karim Tunda to the city from New Delhi, amidst tight security, in connection with a case booked against him here in 1998 on charges of waging war against India.

Tunda was arrested at the Indo-Nepal border two months ago. The SIT officials brought him in a special flight this morning. Armed policemen, along with Task Force sleuths, guarded Tunda when he landed at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA). He was first taken to the SIT office in Himayathnagar and later produced before the magistrate.

After that, he was formally declared arrested in the case. After the magistrate granted 14-days judicial remand of Tunda, the police officials shifted him to Cherlapally central prison where he was lodged in a high security barrack. Earlier, a local court in Delhi had allowed the plea of SIT seeking Tunda’s custody after he was remanded to judicial custody till October 15 in connection with the 1997 bomb blast case booked against him in Delhi. The city police officials, in their plea, said that a case was booked on July 2, 1998, on a complaint that “ISI activities are going on in order to wage war against the government and to create unrest in India and to cause damage to internal security of India and to Hindus and their properties on a large scale.” The SIT officials said they would file a petition in a local court here seeking 15 days custody of Tunda.
