In a first, a matrimonial meet for senior citizens

200 interested persons likely to attend unique event

Not many get a second shot at life but senior citizens in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana might get one this month. In a unique initiative, two matrimonial service providers have decided to conduct a marriage registration event for single men and women aged above 50-years.

A total of 150 men and 50 women are expected to come to Hyderabad for registrations on July 23. The senior-matrimonial event will be organised jointly by Gujarat-based Anubhuti and City-based Thodu Needa, a city based platform.

Speaking to

The Hindu , Natubhai, a retired employee of the Planning Commission, who founded Anubhuti in 2002 said: “I thought of doing a service for senior citizens after I narrowly escaped Gujarat earthquake of 2001. I believe life has to be cherished and it is a blessing to have a companion.” Starting 2002, Anubhuti conducted over 116 marriages. Thodu Needa conducted 100 marriages of couples who hail from the two Telugu States.

Companion needed

Already the two platforms have received over 20 applications from senior citizens.

“My wife passed away in 2005 and both my children are busy with their lives. Daughter lives abroad and son has a good family. Even my granddaughters asked me to get a companion,” said an 80-year-old S.V. Ramana Rao who registered for the event.

During the event, those interested will have to give proof of their single status. Aadhaar cards, death or divorce certificates of spouses will be checked to prevent marriage fraud.

Live-in allowed

While marriage market is marred by social and economic strictures, senior-citizens’ matrimony is more inclusive and progressive. Facilitating platforms allow men and women to live together as companions without the wedlock. Quoting Supreme Court judgement of 2011 Mr. Natubhai said: “Some people do not want to go through another marriage. Some divorcees get worried about parting ways for the second time. And others have figured out that marriage is only another institution. Such people prefer to live together.”

Speaking to The Hindu , a 56-year-old divorcee from Vijayawada Jyothi Rao said: “I realised it is difficult to live alone. When I read about this opportunity I wanted to try finding a partner who suits me. Unlike my first marriage I want this to work”.

Women encouraged

“Women are encouraged to attend the event. We will reimburse travel fare for those who cannot afford it,” Mr. Natubhai said.

Anubuti conducted such marriage registration events in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharasthra during the past five years.
