Carriage Repair Shop (CRS), Tirupati, on South Central Railway (SCR) achieved the distinction of being first of its kind on Indian Railways for any workshop to receive the prestigious ‘GreenCo – Gold Rating’ certification for maintaining passenger coaches.
GreenCo - Gold Trophy and Certificate is awarded by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The Trophy and Certificate was presented by Railways Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu during the World Environment Day celebrations held at the National Rail Museum on June 5.
SCR General Manager Vinod Kumar Yadav expressed his happiness at the recognition and complimented the officers and staff responsible for attaining the landmark. The team led by Arjun Mundiya, Chief Mechanical Engineer, SCR called on the GM at the Rail Nilayam.

The workshop had strived hard during the last one year to reduce energy consumption and water utilisation drastically. It went in for solar energy, day pipe lighting, replacement of conventional fittings by LED, etc., Green coverage of the workshop was also increased by planting numerous plants. Solid waste management, water recycling, water harvesting and scrap disposal management have also been put in place.
It is also in the process of developing phyto-remediation to mitigate environmental problems without the need to excavate the contaminated material and dispose it off elsewhere. Chief workshop manager M. Vijaya Kumar, chief workshop engineer K. P. Somkumar and chief mechanical engineer apart from Mr. Mundiya were instrumental in the plan implementation, an official spokesperson informed.
