Sania Mirza has achieved another ‘first’ by an Indian sportswoman. The two-time Grand Slam winner from Hyderabad crossed the magical one-million-followers mark on social networking site Twitter.

She joins illustrious names from Indian sport like Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virender Sehwag, both of whom figure in the top-five most-followed category.

“Well, when you start off tweeting, you don’t think about the numbers. But, honestly [it’s] a great feeling to know so many follow you,” the 26-year-old tennis star said in a chat with The Hindu before leaving for the clay court season in Europe on Thursday.

“I definitely enjoy Twitter. It helps you to connect with your fans and people who love and admire you. A wonderful platform to express your own views on varied subjects too,” feels Sania, who uses the handle @MirzaSania.

“It is a kind of a very personal interaction, which otherwise would not have been physically possible with all those followers. You can still speak your mind. This is the best part of the whole exercise,” explains India’s best-ever woman tennis player. “There will be some who may not like you. It is unfair to expect everyone to admire or love you. But I have learnt how to block them out and keep going on,” says Sania with a big smile.

“When you are on Twitter, you should know how to steer clear of the small things and think of the huge following which cares for you,” she added.
