Relatives of brain dead persons donate organs of deceased

Relatives of two brain dead persons have donated organs of the deceased under the State-run organ donation programme, Jeevandan, a statement here on Monday said.

The liver of one of the brain dead patient, who hails from Visakhapatnam, was flown-in to Hyderabad for transplantation at Global Hospitals, Jeevandan officials said.

K. Murali, a 46-year-old resident of Kotireddy Palli, Sangareddy district, received grievous injuries in a road accident on January 1 and was admitted to a local hospital. Later, he was shifted to Care Hospitals, Banjara Hills, where the treating neurosurgeon declared him brain dead on January 3. Wife and daughter of K. Murali, when contacted by hospital organ donation co-ordinator, readily agreed to donate organs of the deceased to needy patients. Two kidneys and a liver were retrieved and allocated.

24-year-old Simhadri Soma Sekhar, a resident of Nakkapalli, Visakhapatnam district, was injured on December 31, 2014 and was shifted to Care Hospital in Visakhapatnam. The doctors declared him brain dead on January 2 and relatives of the deceased gave consent for organ retrieval under Jeevandan programme. Two kidneys were used for transplantation locally while the liver was sent to Hyderabad.
