Rain disrupts life in Adilabad district

Heavy rainfall for one hour in Adilabad and Kumram Bheem Asifabad districts

The Ichoda-Sirichelma road was cut off due to heavy rainfall in Adilabad on Thursday.

A one-hour spell of heavy rainfall dislocated normal life in Adilabad and Kumram Bheem Asifabad districts on Thursday. While Nirmal district experienced no disturbance, the washing away of a temporary diversion road near Jannaram in Mancherial district cut off the Jannaram-Luxettipet road.

A possible mishap was averted near Vaijapur in Adilabad mandal when a car with six passengers got washed away in the swollen local stream. The passengers were all teachers who managed to get down from the car and reach to a safe place just as it began getting into the strong flow of the stream. Heavy rainfall lashed almost all parts of the four districts between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. which had water flooding all low lying areas in Adilabad and Ichoda towns in Adilabad district. In Adilabad town, water logging was seen in all main streets posing problem for road users.

Water entered houses in Bhagyanagar, GS Estate and Khanapur. Local steams on the outskirts breached their banks and inundated the highway near Ramnagar which impacted smooth flow of traffic.

In Ichoda, the primary health centre and the Tribal Welfare Residential High School and Junior College for Girls saw water logging necessitating evacuation of the inmates. A 200-metre stretch of the NH 44 was also inundated disturbing flow of traffic.

In Ichoda village water logging was reported in Islampura, Ramzanpura, Subhashnagar and market. In Neredigonda mandal headquarter the road to Wadoor remained cut off for sometime due to overflowing local stream. In Kumram Bheem Asifabad district Tumpallivagu was overflowing on the bridge connecting Tiryani with Asifabad. In Bejjur mandal the road between Salgupalli and Dabba, Salgupalli and Chintalapalli was cut off as the local stream was in spate.

The Kadem dam received heavy inflows in the afternoon thanks to the spell of rainfall in its catchment area earlier in the day. As many as 16 of the 17 gates of the dam were lifted in the afternoon. Adilabad district had received over 62 mm of average rainfall up to 8 a.m. on Thursday and the average rainfall for KB Asifabad was nearly 129 mm. The district administrations were taking precautionary measures in view of the forecast for further rainfall.

Meanwhile, in the wake of incessant rains and possible floods, Minister for Finance and Civil Supplies Etala Rajender has instructed the irrigation, electricity and agricultural officials to make them available round the clock to meet any eventuality in the erstwhile Karimnagar district.

Following the rains, the Minister reviewed about the situation with all the district Collectors of Karimnagar, Jagtial, Rajanna-Sircilla and Peddapalli over phone and inquired about prevailing situation. He informed the officials not to sanction any kind of leave and cancel the leaves to the employees working in the emergency departments.
