Health Minister Laxma Reddy on Friday promised steps to improve Arogyasri and the quality of treatment in government hospitals.

Speaking at Telangana State Association of Surgeons of India (ASICON) conference, the Minister lauded the services rendered by surgeons to the society, even as he assured the members of the association that steps would be taken to address their demands.

Earlier, the members demanded that the government bring more diseases under the Arogyasri cover, besides providing speciality healthcare in 50-bed hospitals in rural areas.

“Efforts are on to meet the demands you have raised,” the Minister told the gathering after flagging off the Jagruti Yatra. The yatra vehicle would travel throughout the country to spread awareness about the ASICON conference scheduled to be held in Gurgaon in December.

The surgeons also asked the Minister to stand by the doctors in instances where they might be wrongfully accused of medical negligence.

The doctors said surgeons, particularly those in single-surgeon facilities in rural areas, were under the threat of attacks even when they were not at fault.

Friday’s conference was originally scheduled to be held at Osmania Medical College but was instead held at a city hotel.

The Minister assured the gathering that a state-of-the-art auditorium and conference facility would soon be developed at the college.
