Proposed flyovers get Defence Ministry’s nod

The flyovers from Paradise to ORR and Bowenpally would ease traffic congestion

The State government’s proposal to construct two flyovers – Paradise Junction to Outer Ring Road and Paradise Junction to Bowenpally – to ease traffic congestion on Rajiv Rahadari and the NH-44 leading to Nagpur, appears to have overcome a major hurdle.

The Defence Ministry is learnt to have given its in-principle nod for the two projects that would require 100 acre of land in the possession of the Union Ministry. The Defence authorities, at a meeting held in New Delhi recently, conveyed their willingness to part with the land of around 60 acres for Paradise – ORR flyover and another 40 acre for Paradise – Bowenpally flyover. The State Government is understood to have expressed its readiness to give 593 acres of vacant government land at Jawaharnagar and cash component of ₹ 93 crore in lieu of the Defence landfor the two major infrastructure projects.

The meeting was attended by a delegation of senior State government officials led by Transport, Roads & Buildings Principal Secretary Sunil Sharma where the two sides reached to an understanding.

Defence clearance

“The proposal will require clearance from the Defence Secretary and other senior officials. The Defence authorities have assured to come back once the clearance is accorded so that we can move ahead with the project,” a senior official said. The flyovers envisaged as elevated corridors were conceived with a view to ease the ever increasing traffic on the Rajiv Rahadari, NH-44 and roads leading to Secunderabad.

The Defence Ministry is learnt to have asked the State government to allot another 500 acre land for setting up a firing range for heavy artillery machines.

The government, according to the official, had proposed two sites, one near Vikarabad and another at Wanaparthy, where it was in possession of land required for the firing range. “The Defence Ministry had assured to examine the sites proposed and come back to us soon,” he said.
