Yet another case of Nigerian fraud was busted by the Hyderabad CCS with the arrest of four Nigerians including a woman on Saturday. The police recovered a car, Rs. 4 lakh, household articles worth Rs. 2.5 lakh and six mobile phones from them.
The accused, Peter Austin (29), Ebohon Felix (26), Steffi Ebohon (24) and Uzaonicha Daniel Iwenwanne (26) contacted one Mohd Wasiuddin, a B Tech student of Masab Tank and informed him that he won a lottery of six lakh pounds. The gang members called him over phone and through e mail convinced him to deposit money for registration, customs clearance, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) processing fees and other expenses, in November and December last. “Believing the gang members Wasiuddin deposited about Rs. 35 lakh in different bank accounts operated from Gujarat, Rajasthan and Mumbai, only to realise being cheated,” DCP (Detective Department) G Pala Raju said. The police arrested the gang members after analysing their phone call data record and email conversations. “We are trying to identify the bank account holders to ascertain more facts of the case,” the official added. The police found that the gang members used to buy sweaters, shoes, clothes and other articles with the money they got through cheating people and send it to Nigeria.

‘The Cyber Crime police have warned people against responding to phone calls or emails received from unidentified persons informing them about winning Nokia lottery. “Some fraudsters are calling up people over phone and informing them of winning lottery of Nokia company. People should not fall prey to such gimmicks,” the CCS police said.
